Coupling of Spin and Orbital Motion of Electrons
The spin-orbit coupling till recently was commonly presumed negligible in carbon nanotubes (CNT) due to the lightness of carbon atom and symmetries of flat graphene. Indeed, before the work of Kuemmeth et al, the interpretation of the majority of experiments with charge carriers in CNTs assumed the independent spin and orbital degeneracies of the electron states in a CNT. The approximate four-f...
متن کاملTheory of electrons with orbital degeneracy
The Hubbard model for electrons with orbital degeneracy is shown to have an underlying SUd(4) symmetry of spin-orbital double. A hidden charge SUc(4) symmetry is exposed and an extended Lieb-Mattis transformation, which maps these two symmetries into each other, is given. On the basis of elementary degenerate perturbative theory, it is shown that the system with strong repulsive coupling is equ...
متن کاملKondo effect in single-molecule spintronic devices
We study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot or a single molecule coupled to ferromagnetic leads. Spin-dependent quantum charge fluctuations in the dot induce the lifting of the spin degeneracy of the dot. It leads to the dot’s level spin splitting observed in the nonequilibrium transport as a splitting of a zero-bias anomaly in the differential conductance. We discuss basic properties of this ef...

متن کاملOrbital Magnetism of Bloch Electrons III. Application to Graphene
The orbital susceptibility for graphene is calculated exactly up to the first order with respect to the overlap integrals between neighboring atomic orbitals. The general and rigorous theory of orbital susceptibility developed in the preceding paper is applied to a model for graphene as a typical two-band model. It is found that there are contributions from interband, Fermi surface, and occupie...
